Every now and then something interesting comes up Every now and then something interesting comes up on our Instagram feed - and this looked like something we should give a try! Blue Crab @ Coast Hotels here in Victoria teamed up with Cobble Hill Winery in their first ever Winemakers Dinner! If you haven’t been, Blue Crab is right on the Inner Harbour, with a lovely view of the harbour. That being said, it was already 6pm, sun had set, so the view was of twinkling lights. Amuse bouche: a tasty morsel of scallop on a spoon was paired with the 2023 Rose, a delightful, fruity dry rose with crisp acidity and distinct red cherry, currant and hint of blossoms on the palate. First course: Chanterelles on Toast was exquisite! paired with 2023 Kismet - a refreshing white blend with tart acidity, complexity and a warming hint of ginger on the palate. Loved this wine! Second course: Szechuan Pork Belly paired with the 2023 Zweigelt. An Austrian varietal presenting a spicy, fruit forward red berry palate and lovely spice that melded well with the punch of the pork. Third course: Beef Rillette paired with 2023 Merlot. I personally feel something a bit more robust would have fared a bit better given the richness of the yam terrine and beef in the dish. Fourth course: Bison Striploin melted in our mouths and the unami rich potatoes with the bone marrow and rich demi glaze was well suited to offset the richness of the meat. The 2023 Castel was paired with this course. While a unique blend of grapes and a complex nose, on the palate it didn’t quite have the same depth, and didn’t seem to stand up well to the bison. Dessert course was a wonderful Poached Plum Crumble paired with the 2022 Storming the Castel - black fruitiness, fortified but not cloyingly sweet. Executive Chef Dan Cunningham and his team did a stellar job - food, presentation and timing of the courses were excellent, and we all enjoyed the ‘playfulness’ of the dishes. Winemaker Dylan Sheldon from Cobble Hill Winery presented some promising wines, and we definitely enjoyed their banter during the evening! #coasthotels #cobblehillwinery #victoriarestaurant #winestagram #cowichanvalleywine #bcwine

However, time has shown me that while I enjoy drinking wine, I do also enjoy challenging myself.
