Wine tasting note – Santorini. A little food with your wine…
While in Santorini in 2016, we took a little scooter ride to some local wineries. Domaine Sigalas, stood out for us. The wine tasting included a full spectrum of their whites and reds, as well as a lovely compliment of cheeses, charcuterie and bread. We enjoyed the Sigalas Classic flight, and this wine tasting note – Santorini reflects our experience.
This, if you can believe, was for one person! But, we shared. Which was a good thing as it was alot of wine and food for lunch! It perfectly complemented the dry, high acidity of the white wines, and the red berry flavour of the reds.
The terroir of Santorini is revealed in its bold wines.
From Wikipedia:
“Santorini is a Greek wine region located on the archipelago of Santorini in the southern Cyclades islands of Greece. Wine has been produced there since ancient times, but it was during the Middle Ages that the wine of Santorini became famous worldwide under the influence of the Republic of Venice. The Italian influence is still present in modern Santorini winemaking: the most famous Tuscan sweet wine is called Vin Santo just like Santorini’s Vinsanto/Visanto (labeled such to differentiate it from the Tuscan wine). It is made in a passito style from grapes dried in the sun after harvest.
Santorini also produces blended and rosé wine made from white grapes such as Athiri, Aidini and Assyrtiko, and red grapes such as Mandelaria.”
Their whites were varied and very dry. These are beautiful to our palate. Their reds were very much in the Merlot stream for body, with lovely berry smells and flavour.
