Cruising 101 – Choosing one when there are so many Ships
You start looking online at some cruise lines and then you start getting ads in Facebook for that cruise lines newly launched ship. Ohhhh, that is a nice one, so cool, modern, exactly what I would like. This Cruising 101 – Ships will help you choose!
Or is it?
If you read our ‘Cruising 101 – Choice’ you know that not all cruise ships are the same. They have their own personality, clientele they attract, and a seasonal base which largely dictates what ports they will stop in and the ‘type’ of cruise experience it will be – fun in the sun, educational, adventurous, etc.
So, let’s simplify how you choose a ship. You may know which itinerary you want, so, take a look at the ship.
The Ship
- Does it have the amenities I want? eg. pools, hot tub, spa, 4+ restaurants, etc.
- Does it have the food I want?
- What is the age group onboard typically?
- How many people are on it? (so, it is a small hotel or a large resort)
- How old is the ship? If older, has it recently been refurbished?
- Can you see yourself on that ship enjoying yourself?
- If you have cruised before, do you get loyalty points? After a few cruises it can make a big difference! (eg. laundry, wifi, priority embarkation, events on board)
Answering these questions will help ensure your cruise experience is the best it can be!
The ship you choose is one part of your decision. But, it’s a big one! If you prefer modern ships with old world charm and inclusive amenities, there’s a ship or two for that. If you like comfort, laid back atmosphere, no dress code and absolutely all you can eat – there’s a ship for that as well.
A note on cruise lines
Each cruise line has a personality. We tend towards cruise lines that align with our lifestyle and that attract similar clientele. Honestly, the cruise line should be one that attracts you. If you don’t like it’s website or how it markets itself, listen to your instincts. Their ‘brand’ which reflects their personality will be reflected in their service onboard. It will be part and parcel of the experience.
