Bream Creek – What a great Tassie riesling!

A great introduction to Tassie white wine for sure. Sometimes I have a sip of wine and think ‘this is really good’. No real thought about it or consideration, it justs pops into my head.  It happened with this wine.  I was told it was a riesling. I was very surprised.  Pleasantly surprised. This post is a tasting note on our lovely first wine tasting of a Tasmania white wine from Bream Creek Vineyard

Tasmanian Wine

Currently 1500 hectares of land in Tasmania are under vine with the majority being white and the remainder red approximately a 55 to 45% split. The focus in Tasmania is really on quality wine less so than quantity. Of note just point one percent of Tasmanian wines are exported worldwide. The focus and Tasmania is on light bodied Pinot Noir’s, grapefruit flavoured Chardonnay’s, structured sparkling wines and refined and aromatic rieslings.

Bream Creek – The Vineyard

Bream Creek Vineyard is boutique winery located in Tasmania, Australia.  They vineyard is planted on a north-east ridge looking over Marion Bay and the Tasman Sea, on Tasmania’s east coast.  It experiences a cool maritime climate, long sunny summer days, and gentle sea breezes.  These all contribute to an extended ripening period.

Bream Creek – The Tasting of Riesling

We are in Tasmania visiting friends of ours.  Our host suggested this first bottle might be nice to try.  We don’t drink alot of riesling, but, I thought giving it a go would be a great idea.  Our hostess shared that in preparation for our visit she completed her level 1 WSET, so we both agreed to do a proper tasting.

Bream Creek Tasting

A clear, pale lemon white wine.

Aroma is clearly displaying citrus notes of lemon and lime, pear, and some floral notes, possibly jasmine.

On the palate, in addition to the lemon, pear and jasmine, there was gooseberry.

High acidity balanced the fruit notes.  Some secondary fermentation (lees) resulting in some complexity in the mouth feel – so, medium plus in body with toast and brioche notes.  Medium alcohol. Pronounced flavour intensity.

Finish was medium plus.

All in all, a very good riesling from Bream Creek Vineyard.  Looking forward to visiting the winery over the next couple weeks to try a few more of their offerings.
