Pressing Matters is a great example of Tasmania wine
The Vineyard and Cellar Door is located a short drive out of Richmond and approximately 30 minutes away from Hobart. Located in the Coal River Valley Wine Region, and it is a beautiful and well developed vineyard. Check out their website for more information the family that runs on its website. This block post is to share with you our wine tasting experience at the beautiful pressing matters.
Tasmania Wine
Currently 1500 ha of land in Tasmania are under vine with the majority being white and the remainder red. Approximately a 55% to 45% split. The focus in Tasmania is really on quality less so than quantity. Of note, just point one percent (0.1%) of Tasmanian wines are exported worldwide. The focus in Tasmania is on light bodied Pinot Noir’s; grapefruit – flavoured Chardonnay’s; structured sparkling wines; and, refined and aromatic rieslings.
Tasmania Climate
Tasmania‘s cool maritime climate is the result of being cooled by prevailing winds off southern ocean.
Pressing Matters: Wine Tastings
Wine tasting: Blanc de Nuits
This Blanc de Nuits from 2017 was very tasty. The toast and brioche flavours were prominent. There was definitely some vivid lemon fruit flavour, more than typical. Delicate mousse with some obvious times on the lees (hence the toast and brioche). A medium plus finish. A very good sparkling wine, and at $89 a reasonable purchase for the quality.
Wine tasting : 2023 Riesling
Again, a very tasty Riesling from here in Tasmania. Citrus (lemon, lime) refreshing aromas, as well as on the palate and some fairly aromatic herbaceous notes – honeysuckle and jasmine. This riesling was off dry so a little bit of residual sugar there. Medium + complexity and finish – very good overall.
Wine tasting : 2024 Rose
This was a tasty, light and dry rosé from 2024. On the nose and palate, strawberry, raspberries and cream. The light pink color due to a few hours on the skin, and cold pressing. A good rosé, but with so many offerings here in Tasmania you are spoiled for choice.
Wine tasting : Pinot Noir 2021
With this Pinot Noir, some very interesting aromas and flavours. With this offering, the winery has partnered with a neighbouring vineyard to present this offering. Aromas and palate of red fruit, including cherry and strawberry, as well as some notes of blueberry and blackberry. Obviously sometime on the lees with the toast and brioche notes. Still lots of fruit on the palate for a 2021. High acidity, medium tannins and a medium + complexity. Finish was medium + as well. A very good pinor noir.
Wine tasting: Pinot Noir Cuvée 2019
This offering from 2019 is an exclusive of only 900 bottles. These were drawn only from the top six barrels. Very fruity with more ripe red fruit notes of cherry and moving towards black fruit – black cherries, blackcurrant. Medium to full bodied with complexity. Dry, medium + tannins and a medium + finish. My partner thought it more an outstanding finish! Very good to outstanding pinot noir.
Wine Tasting: Pressing Matters R139
This lovely dessert wine was a real treat. They were made from 100% riesling cane cut grapes left on the vine to dry on the framework. The aromas and palate are of banana, honey, and apricot. An absolutely lovely finish to an excellent wine tasting.
Pressing Matters: Food with Wine
We enjoyed a beautiful charcuteries plate with our tasting. Cold cuts, cheese, pickles and fresh bread were all on display to complement our wine.

Summary of Pressing Matters
This visit to Pressing Matters was very enjoyable. This is a new vineyard for us – not just for this visit to Tasmania but also missed on previous visits. We highly recommend this vineyard and encourage you to make reservations!
